The Department of Medical Laboratory Science offers a 5-year programme for the award of Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (MLS). It is a tailored programme designed to produce Medical Laboratory Scientists who play a critical role in healthcare, providing laboratory analyses that form the evidence base for medical care. These professionals ensure the accuracy and quality of results, validate laboratory methods, and interpret health implications, making their expertise vital for physicians. Our program aims to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel as Medical Laboratory Scientists, ensuring they are well-prepared to contribute to the health sector both locally and globally. The MLS program offers a comprehensive curriculum, beginning with Basic Medical Sciences at the 200 level and progressing to advanced core courses in the 300, 400, and 500 levels. Key areas of study include:

Medical Microbiology/Parasitology
Clinical Chemistry
Hematology/Blood Transfusion
Histopathology
Immunology/Immunochemistry
Instrumentation and Laboratory Management

Professional examinations are held in the second semester of the 400 and 500 levels to ensure that students meet the rigorous standards of the profession. The Department of Medical Laboratory Science is fully accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC), reflecting our commitment to providing high-quality education.

Admission Requirements

Admission through the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (5 years Degree Programme)

Candidates seeking admission into the B.Sc. Medical Laboratory Science programme must have:

UTME score as determined.
UTME subject combination – English language, Physics, Chemistry Biology.
Not less than five (5) credit passes in ordinary level WAEC/GCE/NECO/NABTEB or the equivalent in not more than two sittings. The subjects should be English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
Admission through Direct Entry (4-years Full-Time Degree programme)

Candidates seeking direct entry admission into the B.Sc. Medical Laboratory Science programme must have:

Not less than ordinary level credit passes in at least five (5) subjects in WAEC/GCE /NECO/NABTEB or the equivalent in not more than two sittings. The subjects should include English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
In addition, candidates must have at least two Advanced Level passes in GCE/IJMB/JUPEB (Biology, Physics, Chemistry).
Transfer students

Transfer students from other faculty in the university/other universities should have:

B.Sc. degree (in view) in relevant science disciplines like Zoology, Microbiology, Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry as approved by the senate.
Diploma in a relevant discipline, obtained from a recognized University
National Diploma, from a recognized polytechnic or College of Education.
HND in relevant fields as approved by the senate
Direct Entry Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board registration.

Head of the Department of Medical Laboratory Science

Dr. Ayanlere

Dr. Ayanlere is the Head of the Department of Medical Laboratory Science at Wellspring University. With an extensive background in both academia and public health, Dr. Ayanlere brings a wealth of experience and expertise to her role. Before joining Wellspring University, Dr. Ayanlere served as the Director of Medical Laboratory Services at Central Hospital Benin under the Edo State Hospital Management Agency. Her career in medical laboratory science spans several decades, during which she has significantly contributed to both clinical practice and academic scholarship. Dr. Ayanlere's academic credentials are impressive. She holds an Associate of Medical Laboratory Science (AMLS) and a Fellow of Medical Laboratory Science (FMLS) from the School of Medical Laboratory Science at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH). She also earned a Master of Medical Laboratory Science (MMLS) from Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Science. Further enhancing her qualifications, she completed her Ph.D. in Medical Laboratory Science from the University of Benin.

Throughout her career, Dr. Ayanlere has authored numerous articles published in reputable local journals and has actively participated in national conferences, contributing to the advancement of medical laboratory science in Nigeria. She is a dedicated member of the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria, reflecting her commitment to the profession. Dr. Ayanlere’s leadership at Wellspring University is marked by her dedication to academic excellence and her commitment to preparing the next generation of medical laboratory scientists. Her blend of practical experience and academic prowess positions her uniquely to lead the department towards achieving its educational and research goals.
