The Department of International Relations, Public Administration and Security Studies is a foundational pillar of the College of Social and Management Sciences at Wellspring University. Initially, it offered programs in both International Relations & Diplomacy and Mass Communication until 2014, when Mass Communication became an independent department. Recently, it included two programmes to become the Department of International Relations, Public Administration and Security Studies. The Department offers comprehensive four-year programmes leading to the award of a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree either in International Relations & Diplomacy, Public Administration or Criminology and Security Studies. These programmes are meticulously designed to equip students with a deep understanding of the related theories and practices, preparing them to address complex socio-political issues at both national and international levels. Students engage in rigorous coursework, research projects, and practical simulations to develop critical thinking and analytical skills necessary for effective problem-solving in the global arena. The Department of International Relations and Diplomacy is fully accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC), ensuring that our academic programs meet the highest standards of quality and rigour.
Graduates of these programmes are well-prepared for a variety of career paths, including: Diplomatic Service, International Organizations, Law enforcement, Government and public service, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), Public Policy and Administration, International Business and Trade, Media and Communication, etc. The program also provides a solid foundation for further studies and research in international relations and related fields.
Admission Requirements
Admission through the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (4 years Degree Programme)
Candidates seeking admission into this department must have:
UTME score as determined.
UTME subject combination – English, Mathematics, Economics, Civic Education/Government/History and any other form of Art or Social Science subject.
Not less than five (5) credit passes in ordinary level WAEC/GCE/NECO/NABTEB or the equivalent in not more than two sittings. The subjects should be English Language, Mathematics, Economics, and any other two from Social Science (Civic Education, Geography, Government, History) or Commercial (Accounts, Bookkeeping, Commerce, Insurance, Marketing, Office Practice, Financial Accounting, Store Management) or Science (Biology, Chemistry, Computer Studies, Data Processing or Physics).
Admission through Direct Entry (3-years Full-Time Degree programme)
Candidates seeking direct entry admission into this department must have:
Not less than ordinary level credit passes in at least five (5) subjects in WAEC/GCE /NECO/NABTEB or the equivalent in not more than two sittings. The subjects should be English Language, Mathematics, Economics, and any other two from, Social Science (Geography, Government) or Commercial (Accounts, Bookkeeping, Commerce, Insurance, Marketing, Office Practice, Financial Accounting, Store Management) or Science (Biology, Chemistry, Computer Studies, Data Processing, Physics).
In addition, the candidate must have at least two Advanced Level passes in GCE/IJMB/JUPEB.
Diploma in a relevant discipline, obtained from a recognized University.
National Diploma, from a recognized polytechnic.
National Certificate of Education from a recognized College of Education.
Direct Entry Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board registration.

Professor Steve Amiemenkharu Iyayi
Professor Steve Amiemenkharu Iyayi is a distinguished academic and the Dean of the College of Social and Management Sciences (CSMS) at Wellspring University. He is a Professor of Public Administration and currently serves as the Head of the Department of International Relations, Public Administration and Security Studies. Professor Iyayi holds several advanced degrees, including:
Ph.D. in Public Administration
M.Sc. in International Relations
M.Sc. in Corporate Governance
B.A. in History
His illustrious career began at Auchi Polytechnic, Auchi, where he served as Registrar for ten years (2001 to 2011). Following this administrative role, he transitioned to academia, teaching at Auchi Polytechnic and serving as a visiting lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, from July 2006 to September 2009. Professor Iyayi is a Fellow of the Institute of Corporate Administration of Nigeria and a Member of the Nigerian Institute of Management. He is recognized as a Google Scholar and has an extensive publication record, with numerous articles published in both local and international journals. His research contributions span a variety of topics within public administration and international relations. In addition to his academic and administrative roles, Professor Iyayi has actively participated in numerous conferences and workshops worldwide, presenting papers and contributing to the global discourse in his fields of expertise. He serves as a reviewer for the International Relations and Diplomacy Journal in the USA and has facilitated the supervision of Master's degree theses in Public Administration for the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN). As the Dean of the College of Social and Management Sciences at Wellspring University, Professor Iyayi plays a pivotal role in shaping the academic and administrative framework of the college. His leadership is characterised by a commitment to academic excellence, research innovation, and the professional development of both faculty and students. Professor Iyayi's diverse experience and extensive knowledge make him a valuable asset to Wellspring University, where he continues to inspire and mentor the next generation of public administrators and social scientists.
