The Department of Economics is a foundational program within the College of Social and Management Sciences (CSMS) at Wellspring University. It offers a comprehensive and dynamic four-year degree program leading to the award of a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Economics. This program is meticulously designed to provide students with a solid academic and professional foundation, preparing them for a wide range of career opportunities in both the public and private sectors. The B.Sc. in Economics program at Wellspring University equips students with critical analytical and quantitative skills, enabling them to understand and address complex economic issues. The curriculum covers a broad spectrum of economic theories and applications, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared for advanced studies or professional careers. Some areas of study include: Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Econometrics, Development Economics, International Economics and more. Admission Requirements

Admission through Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (4 years Full-Time Degree Programme)

Candidates seeking admission into the B.Sc. Economics programme must have:

UTME score as determined.
UTME subject combination - English, Mathematics, Economics, and any other from: Social Science or Commercial or Science.
Not less than ordinary level credit passes in at least five (5) subjects in GCE /NECO/NABTEB or the equivalent in not more than two sittings. The subjects must include English, Mathematics, Economics, and any other two from: Social Science (Geography, Government) or Commercial – (Accounts, Bookkeeping, Commerce, Insurance, Marketing, Office Practice, Financial Accounting) or Science – (Agricultural Science, Biology, Computer Studies or Data Processing).
Admission through Direct Entry (3-years Full-Time Degree programme)

Candidates seeking direct entry admission into the B.Sc. Economics programme must have:

Not less than ordinary level credit passes in at least five (5) subjects in WAEC/GCE /NECO/NABTEB or the equivalent in not more than two sittings. The subjects must include English, Mathematics, Economics, and any other two from: Social Science – (Geography, Government) or Commercial (Accounts, Bookkeeping, Commerce, Insurance, Marketing, Office Practice, Financial Accounting) or Science (Agricultural Science, Biology, Computer Studies or Data Processing).
In addition, the candidates must have passing grades in two subjects at Advanced Level GCE/ JUPEB/IJMB
National Diploma (OND)/National Certificate of Education

Dr. Oyegun Gbenga

Dr. Oyegun Gbenga is a distinguished Senior Lecturer and the Acting Head of the Department of Economics at the College of Social and Management Sciences. An accomplished Economic Analyst, Dr. Gbenga brings a wealth of experience from various sectors, including academia, oil and gas, and banking. Dr. Gbenga holds a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Economics, graduating with Second Class Honours (Upper Division) from Ondo State University, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State. He further pursued advanced studies, earning a Master of Science (M.Sc.) and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Monetary Economics from the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Dr. Gbenga’s professional journey is marked by significant contributions to economic analysis across different industries. His academic work includes authoring chapters in economic-based books and publishing numerous journal articles in reputable local and international journals. His research interests lie in econometrics, petroleum, and energy economics, where he aims to develop economic models to aid in formulating theories pertinent to the development of the African and Nigerian economies. An active participant in the academic community, Dr. Gbenga regularly attends national and international conferences, where he presents his research and engages with other experts in the field. His involvement in these conferences underscores his commitment to staying at the forefront of economic research and policy development. Dr. Gbenga aspires to create economic models that will significantly contribute to the formulation of theories relevant to the development of the African economy in general, and the Nigerian economy in particular. His work is driven by a passion for economic development and the application of rigorous analytical methods to solve real-world economic problems.
