Department of Biological Sciences

About

The Department of Biological Sciences is currently running two (2) programmes – Microbiology and Biochemistry. The duration for the award of Bachelor of Science (B. Sc.) in each of the programmes is four (4) years. The programmes are structured to offer students up-to-date scientific knowledge and cutting edge laboratory skills in the field of Microbiology and Biochemistry. Upon successful completion of the programme, graduates of Microbiology or Biochemistry are easily employed in government or private owned research institutes, educational institutions, pharmaceutical, beverage and food industries, environmental organizations, among others. Graduates from the programme could also advance their knowledge and skills by acquiring higher degrees and certifications such as Institute of Public Analysts of Nigeria (IPAN). The Department of Biological Sciences has been fully accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

Meet the Department Head

Dr. Ndukwe Maduka is a Lecturer II and acting Head, Department of Biological Sciences, College of Science and Computing, Wellspring University, Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. His area of specialization is Food and Industrial Microbiology. He has more than twelve (12) years work experience which span through the Academia and Food industry.

He holds a B. Sc in Microbiology with a Second Class Honours from Abia State University, Uturu. In addition, he has an M. Sc and Ph. D in Industrial Microbiology from University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State. He has published more than thirty-five (35) scholarly articles in both local and international journals. He has also attended several national and international conferences; including workshops. He was the External Examiner at Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri, Imo State from 2018 – 2019. Dr. Maduka’s research interest is in the development of locally fermented foods as a strategy towards boosting the nation’s economy and ensure that food security is improved.
