About Wellspring

A dynamic private institution,
rooted in pan-African purpose.

Wellspring University is a dynamic private institution in Nigeria, inspired by a pan-African vision of education and leadership. Founded in 2009 in GRA, Benin City, Edo State, our story is one of resilience, growth, and transformation. Today, we offer 20 undergraduate programs across four colleges, alongside a robust postgraduate school.

We are a vibrant, multicultural community of staff and students, united by a shared commitment to excellence and impact. At Wellspring University, education goes beyond academics; we cultivate leaders with the mindset and skills to drive positive change in their communities, their country, and the world.

Our Story

We almost didn't make it.That's exactly why we're here.

Our first decade wasn't easy. From everyday growing pains to seismic disruptions, Wellspring was tested at every turn. In 2020, a global pandemic halted the world. In 2021, we lost our library to an electrical fire. We stood at the edge.

We didn't fall.

We chose to treat our survival not as luck but as a mandate, a second chance to rebuild with intention and to become the university we were always meant to be. Every student who walks through our doors today is part of that comeback story.

2010

We began operations in Benin City.

Wellspring University officially began operations in GRA, Benin City, Edo State, opening its doors to a first cohort of students with a bold vision to deliver world-class education rooted in African reality.

A low point that became a turning point.

With only 237 students enrolled, staff salaries unpaid for months, and turnover at an all-time high, Wellspring stood on the edge of closure, a moment that would later define its resilience and the institution it was about to become.

Rebuilding from the ground up.

After a devastating electrical fire razed the university library in May, a bold new Strategic Direction launched in November, pivoting the institution around Africa's educational future and the role universities must play.

A 490% comeback in enrollment.

In the 2023/24 session, Wellspring recorded its highest enrollment to date, 1,200 undergraduate and over 200 postgraduate students, marking a 490% increase from 2019 and a clear signal that the revival was working.

Crossing the 2,000-student mark.

In the 2024/25 session, Wellspring passed the 2,000 students benchmark, a milestone that confirmed the institution's resilience, the relevance of its programmes, and the growing trust of families across Nigeria and beyond.

The Innovation Hub opens its doors.

In the 2026/27 session, Wellspring is set to open the Ubemilin Innovation Hub, a purpose-built space for entrepreneurship, mindset development, mentorship and the practical learning that turns ideas into ventures.
