The department offers a degree programme leading to the award of the Bachelor of Science (Taxation).
This degree programme focuses on the practice of collecting money from citizens and trading companies by government institutions, in order to finance public institutions, goods and services. Our students would be exposed to areas such as economy, legislation, politics, public administration and international business. At the conclusion of their degree, graduates can help organisations take important business decisions, by providing financial counselling and guidance.
Graduates in taxation can work as tax advisors and analysts, investigators, auditors, tax partners in accounting and law firms, revenue managers, policy makers, tax inspectors, among others. Professionals can work in accountancy and law firms, investment, insurance agencies, software companies, the public sector, or charities. Areas of expertise includes accounting administration, calculating tax liabilities, performing legal analysis, and more.
BASIC ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
In addition to the general University requirements, the department shall apply the following in considering admissions of students.
Admission through the University Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME)
Candidate for admission into the four-year degree programme in Taxation must possess at least five (5) credit passes in the Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE); General Certificate of Education (GCE), Ordinary level (O/L); National Business and Technical Educational Board (NABTEB), or their equivalents, which must include Mathematics, English Language and Economics or any other social science subject at not more than two sittings. In addition, candidates must have minimum acceptable pass mark in UTME.
Admission through Direct Entry (3-year full-time degree programme)
Passes in Accounting and Economics in the Advanced Level (A/L) of General Certificate of Education (GCE), Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB), the National Business and Technical Education Board (NABTEB) or Joint University Preparatory Examination Board (JUPEB). In addition, candidates must possess at least five credit passes in WAEC, NECO, NABTEB or GCE, including English Language and Mathematics. The results at both levels must be obtained at not more than two sittings.
Diploma in a relevant discipline, at not lower than credit level, obtained from a recognized university; or National Diploma, at not lower than Upper Credit, from a recognized polytechnic or College of Technology. In addition, candidates must possess five credit passes, including English Language and Mathematics at the WAEC, GCE (O/L), or NABTEB.
