MASTER OF SCIENCE (MSc) DEGREE IN MICROBIOLOGY

PHILOSOPHY AND OBJECTIVES

The postgraduate programme (M.Sc.) is structured to provide graduates of microbiology a more in-depth knowledge in the field of microbiology; with a view of specializing in any of the areas of the discipline. The programmes/courses are designed to:

  1. Advance the knowledge of graduates in general and applied areas of Microbiology, particularly in recent advancements in Microbiology.
  2. Acquire training in independent research and study.
  3. Provide trained, high level manpower for Universities, Industries, Medical, Public Health or Veterinary Laboratories and Agricultural Institutes.

 

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

All candidates seeking admission into all postgraduate programmes in Microbiology should possess at least, five ordinary level credit passes in WASC, WAEC, SSCE/GCE or NECO. The subjects should include English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

 

(i)    Holders of Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree (at least Second Class Honours) in

Microbiology from Wellspring University or any other University recognized by Senate.

 

(ii)   Holders of B.Sc. (Hon.) degree (at least Second Class Honours) in related fields of study

from Wellspring University or any other University recognized by Senate.

 

(iii) Candidates with qualifications such as Fellow of Institute of Medical Laboratory

Technology (FIMLT) whose qualifications and experience are deemed adequate may also be

considered for admission. Such candidates will be made to take some undergraduate

prerequisite courses in addition to the prescribed courses for the post-graduate programmes

theyhave applied for.

 

DURATION OF PROGRAMME

 

Full-Time: (3 – 5 Semesters)

 

REQUIREMENTS FOR GRADUATION

All Candidates for Master of Science (M.Sc.) Degree in Microbiology must pass all prescribed courses in addition to the submission and defence of a thesis in accordance with the stipulations of the general Regulations governing Higher Degrees of Wellspring University. The thesis shall carry a credit load of six (6) units. The minimum pass mark for all courses examined shall be 50%. The thesis shall be graded on a pass/fail basis.  Each candidate must in addition present a seminar on current topic or issues in his/her area of specialization.
